While we were all on the Sunshine Coast for a dance competition, I had the chance to photograph this lovely Adelaide family in a completely different setting from the places we usually explore together.
With the ocean stretching out beside us, the evening became an opportunity to discover somewhere new, enjoy the last of the day’s light and capture their family just as they were.

Finding the Right Light

Beach sessions are always shaped by the weather, and a beautiful sunset isn’t something you can guarantee.
In the lead-up to our session, I kept a close eye on the forecast, monitoring the conditions and waiting for the right opportunity. Rather than simply hoping everything would work out, we stayed flexible and made our plans around finding the best possible light.
Because this was a location I hadn’t photographed before, I also spent time scouting the area beforehand. I wanted to find the little pockets worth exploring, consider how the evening light would fall, and identify spots where the family could move naturally without the session feeling like a series of posed photographs.
That preparation meant we could spend less time figuring things out on the evening and more time enjoying the experience.
An Evening of Exploring Together
From the beginning, the idea was simple: make the session fun, relaxed and seamless.
We explored the beach together, letting the family interact naturally while I looked for those little moments that tell a bigger story. There were goofy exchanges, laughter and playful moments, balanced by quieter interactions, close embraces and the kind of tenderness that can happen when everyone feels comfortable enough to simply be themselves.
We had a lovely connection throughout the session, and I think that comes through in the photographs. Nothing needed to feel overly orchestrated. There was room for personalities to shine, for the family to be a little silly, and for the quieter moments to happen in between.
The best part wasn’t just the beautiful setting. It was seeing the family settle into the experience and enjoy being together.
Letting the Evening Unfold
As the sun lowered towards the horizon, the beach took on that soft, golden glow that makes sunset sessions so special.
The light, the sea breeze and the unfamiliar surroundings gave the photographs their own character, but the heart of the gallery remained the same: the connection between a family and the small moments that make them who they are.
For me, that’s what family photography is about. The location matters. The light matters. The planning matters. But all of it comes together to make space for something more meaningful – photographs that bring you back to how it felt to be there.
An evening of exploring somewhere new. A little laughter. A few quiet moments together. And memories of a family adventure that happened to unfold by the sea.
