Adelaide Cake Smash Photoshoot Preparation

Everything You Need to Know Before Your Cake Smash Session

How to Prepare for a Cake Smash Photoshoot

Your baby’s first birthday is one of those milestones that seems to arrive in the blink of an eye.

One moment they’re taking their first tentative steps, and the next they’re diving face-first into a birthday cake with icing all over their hands, cheeks, and nose.

A cake smash photoshoot is a wonderful way to celebrate this special milestone, capturing your little one’s personality, curiosity, and all the wonderfully messy moments in between.

The good news? You don’t need to worry about organising everything yourself.

Here’s how to prepare for your cake smash session, and why your only job on the day is to relax and enjoy the experience.

Don’t Worry About the Mess

If there’s one thing parents ask me before a cake smash session, it’s this:

“Who’s going to clean up afterwards?”

The answer is simple… I do.

Cake smashes are meant to be messy (that’s part of the fun).

I bring towels, baby wipes, rubbish bags and other essentials so Ie can quickly tidy up once the session is finished. You can simply focus on enjoying your little one’s reactions while I take care of the clean-up.

Less stress for you means more genuine smiles for everyone.

I’ll Bring the Finishing Touches

Every cake smash is a little different, but I also bring a selection of simple props to help create a beautiful setting.

Rather than overwhelming the photos with lots of decorations, I prefer keeping the styling timeless so the focus stays where it belongs…on your little one.

Simple, natural styling allows your baby’s personality to shine through.

What Should My Baby Wear?

Simple is usually best.

Soft neutral colours, earthy tones, and comfortable clothing photograph beautifully and keep the attention on your little one rather than the outfit.

Popular choices include:

  • Rompers
  • Linen overalls
  • Simple dresses
  • Bloomers
  • Knitted outfits
  • Bare feet

If you’d like a more personalised look, you’re welcome to bring a favourite outfit or something that celebrates your family’s style.

Bring a Favourite Toy (Just in Case)

Some babies dive straight into the cake.

Others take a little convincing.

Bringing along a favourite toy or comfort item can help your little one feel relaxed before we begin. Sometimes it’s also useful for capturing attention during those first few photographs.

And who knows, it might even make a special appearance in the final gallery.

Timing Is Everything

The happiest cake smash photos usually happen when little ones are well-rested and well-fed.

If possible, try to schedule the session around your baby’s usual nap routine.

A rested baby is much more likely to enjoy exploring the cake and all the excitement that comes with it.

Don’t Expect Perfection

Some babies enthusiastically destroy the cake within seconds.

Others carefully poke the icing with one finger.

Some decide they’d rather crawl around and explore.

Every child is different, and that’s completely okay.

The goal isn’t to force a particular reaction.

It’s to capture your baby’s personality exactly as they are.

Those genuine expressions are often the photographs families treasure most.

Parents Are Welcome Too

While the cake smash is all about celebrating your little one, I always encourage parents to jump in for a few photographs too.

These first birthday moments aren’t just a milestone for your baby – they’re a milestone for your family.

A few cuddles, smiles, or shared laughs together help tell the complete story of this special season of life.

Relax – I’ve Got the Rest Covered

One of my goals with every session is to make things as easy as possible for parents.

That means:

  • Bringing helpful props
  • Helping with the setup
  • Providing wipes and towels
  • Taking care of the clean-up
  • Guiding the session naturally
  • Giving you space to simply enjoy the moment

You’re there to celebrate your baby’s first birthday.

I’ll take care of everything else.

About Lightframe Family Photography Adelaide

Hi, I’m Brandon – the photographer behind Lightframe Photography Adelaide.

I specialise in natural, golden-hour family photography that captures genuine connection, honest emotion, and the beautifully imperfect moments that make your family unique.

As a husband and father myself, I understand how quickly these seasons of life pass, which is why my sessions are designed to feel relaxed, child-led, and completely natural.

Whether we’re exploring the beach at sunset, wandering through the forest, or simply spending quiet time together outdoors, my goal is always the same: to create warm, timeless images that feel true to your family and the moments you’ll want to hold onto for years to come.
