Choosing a location for your engagement photos can feel like a simple decision.
Beach or forest?
But the location does much more than provide a beautiful backdrop. It changes the way the light falls, the way you move together, the atmosphere of the photographs, and ultimately how your engagement photos feel when you look back at them years from now.
For couples planning an engagement photoshoot in Adelaide, two of my favourite options are the Adelaide Hills and the coast.
Both can create beautiful, natural images. But they tell very different stories.
So, which is right for you?
Adelaide Hills Engagement Photos: Warm, Intimate and Earthy
There’s something naturally romantic about the Adelaide Hills.
Tall trees, winding paths, textured landscapes and pockets of filtered light create an environment that feels private and intimate.
For couples who love the outdoors, the forest can be a wonderful setting for engagement photography.
It gives you somewhere to walk, explore and interact rather than simply standing together and looking at the camera.
And that creates opportunities for photographs that feel natural.

How the Light Behaves in the Forest
Forest light can be incredibly atmospheric.

Then there’s the beach.
Adelaide’s coastline offers an entirely different environment for engagement photography.
Instead of being surrounded by trees, you’re surrounded by space.
Sky.
Ocean.
Sand.
Horizon.
There’s something liberating about that openness.
Beach engagement photos can feel lighter, playful and relaxed, particularly when couples are happy to walk barefoot, explore the shoreline or get their feet wet.
There’s also something beautifully simple about two people walking together beside the ocean.

The biggest difference between forest and beach photography is the way light behaves.
At the beach, there’s very little blocking the sky.
This means you can have much broader, more even light across the scene.
As golden hour approaches, the entire horizon can become part of the photograph.
The sun reflecting across the water can add warmth and sparkle, while the open sky can create beautiful silhouettes as the sun approaches the horizon.
Compared with the filtered light of a forest, beach light often feels more expansive.
It can make the photographs feel open, airy and cinematic in a completely different way.

If the forest feels intimate and adventurous, the beach often feels:
Free. Joyful. Relaxed.
There’s usually more room to move.
You can walk along the shoreline, sit in the sand, play in the water or simply enjoy the sunset together.
For couples who don’t love the idea of a heavily posed engagement session, this can be a particularly comfortable option.
You have something to do.
You’re not just standing there waiting for the photographer to tell you where to put your hands.
You’re spending time together.

Forest vs Beach: Which Is Right for You?
There’s no objectively better location.
The better question is:
Which environment feels more like you?
Choose the Adelaide Hills if you:

- Prefer earthy, warm tones
- Want a more intimate atmosphere
- Enjoy walking and exploring
- Like the idea of filtered golden light
- Want your engagement photos to feel romantic and cinematic
Choose the beach if you:
- Love the ocean
- Prefer open, expansive landscapes
- Want a relaxed and playful atmosphere
- Enjoy walking barefoot in the sand
- Love sunsets and coastal light
- Want bright, airy or dramatic images
And if you’re struggling to choose, there’s another option.
You don’t necessarily have to think of your engagement photos as a formal photoshoot.
Think of them as an experience.
Where would you genuinely enjoy spending an hour together?
That’s probably your answer.
What About Golden Hour?
Both locations can look incredible during golden hour, but the experience is very different.
At the beach, the setting sun has an unobstructed view across the horizon. This can create dramatic skies, glowing reflections and beautiful silhouettes.
In the forest, the sunlight interacts with the trees. Rays can filter between branches, illuminate the background and create pockets of warm light.
This is one of the reasons I love golden-hour engagement photography.
The light is constantly changing.
Rather than creating one identical look for every couple, we can move through different conditions during the session and create a gallery with variety.
Your Engagement Photos Should Feel Like You
There’s a temptation when planning engagement photography to focus too heavily on creating the “perfect” photograph.
But I think the best engagement photos are the ones that remind you of how you actually felt.
The way your partner made you laugh.
The way you held hands while walking.
The quiet moment when you stopped to look at each other.
The excitement of being together at the beginning of this next chapter.
Those moments don’t need to be forced.
They just need a little space to happen.
